“Can You Hear Me Now:  How to Make a Podcast”

Thinking about how to promote your services and reach out to more people?  Want to learn how podcasts can help and how to make your own? This hands-on class is designed to provide a fun yet informative introduction to podcasting and how you can utilize this technology in your library services, to enable your users to access the information whenever they want, wherever they want and however they want it. Basic steps and suggestions on how to make a podcast will be covered and students will be able to enjoy hands-on practice on popular audio recording and editing software and make their first personal podcast.  The first two hours will be face-to-face and the final hour will be via Moodle, a course management system.

Instructor:

Max Anderson earned his MLIS in 1999 from Florida State University.  He is a well-known speaker, and has presented at various conferences including: Computers in Libraries, regional and state library conferences, Midwest Chapter/MLA, and Mid-Atlantic Chapter/MLA.  In 2007, he was invited to Australia and New Zealand by CAVAL to teach classes about social software in libraries. He was invited back for late summer 2009 and will present at the International Congress on Medical Librarianship.  In 2008, he participated in a televised and recorded MLA webcast on Web 2.0.

Max recently published an article in the Georgia Library Quarterly on RFID in Libraries. In spring 2008, Max joined the National Network of Libraries of Medicine - Greater Midwest Region as the Technology Coordinator.  He consults with member institutions on emerging technologies, speaks at regional meetings, creates classes on the use of various technologies for health sciences libraries and is the state contact for Wisconsin and Indiana.

Cheap, Fast and Decent Strategic Planning for Medical Libraries”

A strategic plan is necessary for the success of even a one-person library, but most planning requires too many resources and take too long for medical libraries with stretched budgets and overworked staff. How can you create an effective planning process that takes hours and days to complete rather than months or years?

Participants will learn how to produce a simple but effective strategic plan with a mission/vision statement, goals, tactics, feedback, and input strategies.

Instructor:

Pat Wagner has worked with libraries since 1978 as a trainer and consultant, specializing in personnel, management, leadership, strategic planning, and marketing. She has been a MLA CE trainer since 2002.

Pat is also the LLAMA/ALA regional institute trainer in project management, conflict management and staff communications and a subject matter expert for the University of North Texas LE@D online library program; six of her programs are available, with 22 more in the works.

“Communicating with Physicians:  For Librarians”

The overall goal of this course is to help librarians understand the viewpoint of physicians during a library transaction, and the ways the librarian can direct the interaction in a positive manner. Course participants will gain first hand knowledge from a physician of what the physician’s expectations are during a library transaction/interaction.

Instructors:

Bradley A. Long, MSLS has been the Head of Reference & Liaison Services at the Health Science Library of SUNY Upstate Medical University since 2007.  He has also recently taught several masters-level online library science courses for Clarion University of Pennsylvania.  Over the last 14 years, Mr. Long has worked exclusively in medical libraries, including previous academic medical center experience in Philadelphia, PA and hospital library experience both in Pittsburgh, PA and Wheeling, WV.

Mr. Long received his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and his Master of Science in Library Science from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.  His professional interests include heavy involvement with MLA at the chapter, section, and national levels.

Peter M. Jucovy, M.D. is Chair of the Institutional Review Board at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  Between 1982 and 2000 he was Associate Chief of Staff for Education, a job in which he worked directly with the Chief of the Medical Library.  He is also affiliated with Drexel University College of Medicine, teaching courses for medical students in bioethics and literature.

Dr. Jucovy received his A.B. in English at Brown University, his M.D. from NYU School of Medicine, and graduate education in English at the CUNY Graduate Center.  He trained in pathology at Temple University Hospital and was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, where he applied linguistic analysis to problems in medical diagnosis and physician communication.  Dr. Jucovy has published articles on the language of medical diagnosis, and has lectured to diverse audiences on professional communication in health care settings.

“Measuring Your Impact:  Using Evaluation for Library Advocacy”

“Library users and stakeholders will recognize and value the importance of their library's services and of the librarian to the organization.” That is the ultimate goal of this class. The outcome for the class is that librarians will be able to show the value of their library's services. Participants will become familiar with an evaluation process and will use and take away methods and tools for assessment, evaluation planning, creating logic models, data collection and reporting. The workshop will feature a case-based scenario that moves participants through the steps of an evaluation process. There will also be student discussion and exercises in addition to lecture.

Instructors:

As Associate Director of the NN/LM, Greater Midwest Region, Ruth Holst works with GMR’s Emergency Preparedness Working Group, which has developed several products on emergency preparedness (http://nnlm.gov/gmr/member/emprep/).  Holst was a hospital librarian for more than 30 years before joining the GMR and often talks to hospital librarians about their need to demonstrate the value of the library to administrators.   She is the editor of The MLA Guide to Managing Health Care Libraries and is currently serving as MLA President-Elect.  She is an MLA Fellow, a Janet Doe Award winner, and a former member of the National Library of Medicine’s Biomedical Library Review Committee.  Holst recently co-authored an article about emergency preparedness (J Hosp Librarianship 2009; volume 9, issue 2) and was an editor for the MLA White Paper “Vital Pathways for Hospital Librarians: Present and Future Roles".

As the Outreach and Evaluation Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region, Jacqueline Leskovec works with Network members needing assistance in the areas of planning and evaluation, providing input regarding applications for GMR-funded projects; referral to Outreach Evaluation Resource Center (OERC staff); and assistance with formulating a written logic model and/or evaluation plan.

Jacqueline has been with the GMR since 2005. She is currently state contact librarian for Illinois and Iowa. In addition to her evaluation responsibilities, she does outreach to specific populations; web development; and LISTSERV® management.  She is editor of The Cornflower, the GMR’s blog.  Jacqueline was Assistant Librarian at the University of South Florida Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program in Tampa, Florida. Prior to that, she was library manager with the Advocate Health Sciences Library Network in Chicago, Illinois. Jacqueline has over 15 years practice as a registered nurse, including work in quality improvement in addition to her hospital clinical experience.

“PubMed Clinics of North America:  A Problem-based Approach to Advanced PubMed Searching”

The workshop will focus on a problem-based approach in learning to search the PubMed database. Through case studies, group exercises and hands-on practice, participants will become more efficient PubMed searchers. Participants will be able to search PuMed to locate citations on author, subject or keyword, and institutional searches; create a search strategy using the strengths of the database; apply MeSH headings to enhance a search; use My NCBI to create collections and save searches; and will become familiar with available tools to update their skills and for lifelong learning.

Instructor:

Holly Ann Burt, MLIS, MDiv, is the Outreach and Exhibits Coordinator and Ohio State Contact Librarian for the National Network of Libraries, Greater Midwest Region (NN/LM-GMR).  Holly teaches NN/LM and Medical Library Association (MLA) classes,.  She creates and makes resources publically available on PubMed, Patient Safety, Public Health, Emergency Preparedness, and TOXNET.  She exhibits National Library of Medicine products and services at national and regional conferences, manages several sections of the GMR website and is a member of the MLA Public Health/Health Administration section. Prior to joining the GMR, Holly worked as the Information Resources Manager for the National Patient Safety Foundation.  She received her MLIS from Dominican University and worked as a volunteer map cataloger for the Newberry Library. Her interests include teaching, science, cats, maps, and music.

 “Understanding Health Care Literature:  A Primer for Working with Evidence Based Health Care Principles”

This is an introductory course, although those who are interested in evidence-based practice could also benefit from working with the material. Often evidence-based teaching and learning relies on studying various categories of healthcare research such as therapy, diagnosis, and economics—emphasizing the differences across categories. We as teachers place little emphasis on the aspects of the healthcare literature that are common to all categories of clinical research. This half-day workshop looks at 12 topics or issues and shows why each is important and how it contributes to understanding the importance and applicability of the clinical content of a study. It also shows participants how to find the information easily and effectively (e.g., the question is almost always the first sentence before the Methods section and patient age and gender are found in Table 1). The format will be workshop based with lots of hands-on work from many articles, both good and bad. Most of the work will be done with paper-based examples.

This is an advanced course on critical appraisal for those who are interested in learning how to read and apply clinical articles or those who are involved in teaching critical appraisal.  The course will be based on 3-5 scenarios and rounds of using supplied articles to come to a clinical decision.  Each round of critical appraisal will be done using a different approach to the process.  Attendees will discuss the benefits and harms of each of the ways of presenting critical appraisal at the end of the class.  Almost all of the work will be done with paper-based examples.

Instructor:

Ann McKibbon has been a health sciences librarian for more than 30 years. She is interested in evidence-based practice, integrating information resources into electronic medical records systems, and how clinicians use information. She has published several books and over 50 peer reviewed articles in medical informatics and information sciences and has taught more than 200 workshops in the areas of information retrieval, evidence based medicine, and knowledge translation.

“Distance Education:  Supporting Anywhere Anytime Learning”

The course provides an overview of popular distance education techniques with examples of how librarians are employing them. At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to: describe the various methods of distance education and the instructors’ and learners’ roles in each; discuss current trends and evidence regarding the effectiveness of distance education; identify opportunities and challenges in using distance education for delivering curriculum; plan an educational activity to be delivered using distance education technology; and effectively navigate an online course.

Instructor:

Gale Hannigan received her MLS from UC Berkeley, MPH from the University of Texas and a PhD in Information Science from the University of North Texas.  She is currently a professor and librarian at the Texas A&M Medical Sciences Library where she teaches informatics and evidence-based medicine skills at the College of Medicine and School of Rural Public Health.  She previously worked at the Texas Medical Center Library, the University of Minnesota Bio-Medical Library, and the Upjohn Company.

Gale received MLA’s Estelle Brodman Award for Academic Medical Librarian of the Year in 1996. She has published in the field of informatics and health sciences education.

Her College of Medicine Computers & Medical Information elective and School of Rural Public Health Public Health Informatics courses, as well as an MLA CE course (Incorporating Informatics into the Curriculum, taught with Janis Brown) evolved from onsite courses to being offered totally online.

“Emerging Technologies for Librarians”

Our patrons are increasingly integrating mobile and web-based technologies into daily practice.  It is essential for librarians to investigate, experiment, and utilize these technologies to meet their users where they are and to increase access to timely and relevant health information at the point of need.  Topics discussed include:  geolocation, social media, podcasting, collaboration tools, social networking, new devices (iPhones, G1-Google phones, Blackberrys, smartphones, iPods, Kindles), and methods for keeping up-to-date.

Instructors:

Gabriel Rios is the deputy director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences.  Gabe has worked with emerging technologies such as PDAs, iPods, smartphones, and Web 2.0 services since 1999.  He has co-taught technology-related classes at regional and national meetings.  Gabe actively works with users to increase collaboration and knowledge sharing among technology users and policy makers.  He is also a member of MLA’s Social Networking Software Taskforce and local technology-related groups such as Social Media Club of Birmingham and the Internet Professional Society of Alabama.  In his previous positions, Gabe has directed the implementation of PDA and mobile device support services including:  wireless connectivity, user groups, coordination of mobile content, and curriculum-based instruction for PDA-based clinical decision support tools.  Gabe continues his support of emerging technologies by facilitating the use of Web 2.0 services to meet users where they are.

Melissa De Santis is the Deputy Director at the Health Sciences Library of the University of Colorado Denver, where she oversees the daily operations of a busy academic health sciences library.  In her previous positions she taught classes on the Internet and PDAs to faculty and students.  An active member of the Educational Media and Technology Section of MLA, Melissa is also the MLANET Editor and a member of MLA’s Social Networking Software Task Force which has offered free, online CEs to MLA members on Web 2.0 topics.  She has presented posters and papers on a number of technology topics including instant messaging and intranets.  Melissa received her MLIS from UCLA.

“Super Searcher”

This hands-on course focuses on the advanced search features of web search engines and the cutting edge of searching. Participants will use various search engines, compare the features and utility of each and develop search strategies that will increase the precision and scope of their searching. The students will have discussions and complete exercises as a part of the class. The class includes: discussions of web search engines, indexes and hybrids of the two, commercialism and how it influences searching, finding current events information with search engines, specialized databases for special needs and topics suggested by the participants.
