President's Message

By Melinda Orebaugh, Midwest Chapter President
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, WI
mgorebau@gundluth.org

Greetings Midwest Chapter Colleagues,

It is my distinct pleasure to serve as your 2004 Midwest Chapter president. Our organization is one that I am proud to serve. My tenure as a member of the Midwest Chapter is much longer than I care to admit!

I espouse the grassroots leadership style. Grassroots leadership is a philosophy that empowers every individual to share the responsibility of achieving excellence. Grassroots leadership, a system of beliefs established by D. Michael Abrashoff, U.S. Navy, in his book, It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy. It is a process of replacing command and control with commitment and cohesion by engaging the hearts, minds, and loyalties of workers. Bottom up, not top down.

So what do Captain Abrashoff, a U.S. Navy destroyer and a book on management have in common with the Midwest Chapter? And, why should you care?

The Midwest Chapter / MLA is your organization. Please take responsibility for it. As a member, you are empowered to share in the responsibility for achieving excellence as a chapter. Your job is to communicate with your president, your officers, and your board members regarding your health sciences librarianship concerns, needs, or requests. Engage your hearts and minds in the pursuit of excellence as a chapter. You, the members, are the grassroots of our organization and your input is essential to our continued success.

What is my job in your organization? I work for you. I promise to aggressively listen to you. And, I promise to communicate your concerns to the appropriate parties with purpose and meaning. I will provide you with follow-up and feedback regarding actions taken on your behalf. As a grassroots organization, please utilize all the chapter communication channels available to you: your listserv, your newsletter, your website, your officers and board members. So that I can listen and learn from our membership, feel free to invite me to attend your state health sciences library association meetings. I am already scheduled to attend the Indiana Health Sciences Librarian’s Association and the Wisconsin Health Science Library Association meetings in April. We are the Midwest Chapter; we are responsible for our continued success.

Your officers and board members met on March 26 at the Radisson Hotel & Suites in Chicago. The Midwest Chapter website and MIDLINE will be used to communicate to you board discussion and actions. In the spirit of communication, camaraderie, and networking, please plan to attend our annual meeting “The Road to Collaboration,” in Springfield, Illinois, October 8-12, 2004.

I await your “grassroots” response!

Treasurer's Report

Midwest Chapter/MLA bank accounts have been moved from Cole Taylor Bank in Chicago to US Bank, our new "permanent" bank. Previously, the Chapter moved the accounts every time a new Treasurer was elected. US Bank has numerous locations in all nine states in the Chapter which will be accessible to future Treasurers. The Chapter is the proud owner of a US Bank credit card, allowing us to take advantage of discount prices and facilitating easier bill payment.

Chapter assets are $43,197.72 as of February 16, 2004. The budget, financial statement, ledger and accounts are available on the Chapter web site at http://midwestmla.org/business/treasurer/.

Middleton Health Sciences Library
University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI
julieschneider@library.wisc.edu

As the new chair of the Governmental Relations Committee of the Midwest Chapter, I thought this would be a good opportunity to let everyone know who their state coordinators are. These coordinators are there if you have questions about any legislative issues in your state or if you have information that you would like the coordinator to share with the entire chapter or with other state members. It is hoped that with the help of the state coordinators and other grassroots organizers in each state, we can better communicate legislative and budgetary information to all Midwest Chapter members.

UW-Madison Health Sciences Library
Moving June 1, 2004

By Sandra Phelps, Midwest Chapter Member
University of Wisconsin—Madison, Madison, WI
sphelps@library.wisc.edu

On June 1st the three UW-Madison Health Sciences Libraries will merge into a new home, the Ebling Library, located in the new Health Sciences Learning Center at the west end of campus. With over 50,000 square feet, the new library boasts wireless network capabilities, a patron seating capacity of over 350 seats, sixteen group study rooms, and over nineteen research workstations. All will be housed in a beautiful, serene building with plenty of natural light

Terrance Burton, Library Director, states, “The combined Health Sciences Library will be the heart of the multidisciplinary educational facility. Operating from a single location will allow the HSL staff to expand the quantity and quality of services we can deliver to all of our patrons, regardless of their location. We expect this high-tech, high-touch library to be a magnet for students, faculty, and staff from throughout the university.”

As you plan for your document borrowing needs, we ask that you remember our temporary closing May 29 – June 20. During our move and consolidation, access to the journal and book collection will not be available. We apologize for any inconvenience during this closure. The Ebling Library is tentatively scheduled to open June 21, 2004.

Our library is being named for UW Medical School alumnus Paul R. Ebling, MD ’55. Dr. Ebling enjoyed reading and found great pleasure in expanding his knowledge. A library was always one of his favorite places to spend his free time.

To learn more about the Ebling Library visit our website at http://www.hslc.wisc.edu.

"Seize the E-Journal: Models for Archiving" Symposium
Wednesday, May 26, 2004

MLA's Collection Development Section is planning a half-day symposium on e-journal archiving for the afternoon following the conclusion of the MLA annual meeting. We invite anyone who works with or is interested in e-journal archiving issues to join us at the symposium. MLA membership is not required. This symposium will give participants the opportunity to become familiar with current electronic journal archiving models and discuss future-oriented collection development priorities and strategies for individual, organizational, consortia, and national libraries. The program will include presentations by expert panel members on their archiving models, input from reaction panel members on the impact, feasibility, and interest level in these models for various types of libraries, and breakout sessions that allow participants to discuss existing archiving models and future archiving priorities and standards. For more information, visit the MLA website http://www.mlanet.org/am/am2004/index.html; look under “Meeting Symposia.”

Government Relations Committee and Capitol Hill Visits
