LIS Student Outreach Award Winners at Midwest Chapter MLA 2013

Submitted by Jacqueline Leskovec, MLIS, MA, RN, Outreach, Planning and Evaluation Coordinator, NN/LM Greater Midwest Region, University of Illinois at Chicago

During a recent gathering of the Regional Advisory Council (RAC) of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Greater Midwest Region (GMR), council members suggested that a priority of the GMR should be to engage library students interested in health sciences librarianship. As a result, the GMR created a funding opportunity geared towards graduate library and information school students in the Greater Midwest.

The LIS Student Outreach Award was offered for the first time this year, providing funding for students to attend the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting 2013 that was held October 5-7, 2013, in East Peoria, IL. The purpose of this award is to expose library and information students to health sciences librarianship by allowing students to participate in meetings, conference sessions and other activities designed for them to learn about the importance of health information outreach and services.

Nine students were awarded scholarships to attend the East Peoria meeting. In addition to attending as many posters and presentations as possible and staffing the GMR exhibit booth, students were paired with a mentor through the Midwest Chapter MLA Mentor/Mentee program. An award requirement was to report on the Midwest Chapter experience on the GMR blog, The Cornflower. A list of the student awardees and their blog posts are included below.
