The Medical Library Association recently kicked off its second Research Training Institute (RTI). Like last year (See the article in the most recent past issue of MIDLINE at http://midwestmla.org/midline/?p=3072), the Midwest Chapter is home to five of the 2019 fellows:

  • Mary Pat Harnegie, AHIP, South Pointe Medical Library, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland OH
  • Rachel Hinrichs, AHIP, University Library, Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis IN
  • Laura Menard, Ruth Lilly Medical Library, Indiana University, Indianapolis IN
  • Jolene Miller, AHIP, Mulford Health Science Library, University of Toledo OH
  • Katherine Orze, Health Sciences Library, Loyola University Chicago, Chicago IL

Fellow biographies can be found on the RTI web page: https://www.mlanet.org/page/2019-rti-participants

The RTI started with a very warm, week-long session in July at the UIC Library of the Health Sciences. Twenty fellows gathered with five experienced librarian researchers to learn about and explore the research process: developing a strong research question and identification of theoretical frameworks; selecting the best research design and collecting and analyzing data; and finally discussing how to disseminate research results and track their impact. The Institute will continue over the next year, with regular contact between fellows and research mentors, culminating in presentations at MLA’20.

The on-site week was a great start to the year-long experience, allowing fellows to immerse themselves in research and getting to know one another. Special thanks to Susan Lessick, Director of the RTI, and RTI faculty Lorie Kloda, Jodi Philbrick, Sally Gore, Mark MacEachern, and Emily Vardell.
