Message from the President

Hello, Midwest Chapter/MLA!  I’m privileged to serve as the President of the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association this year alongside our dedicated Executive Board and countless member volunteers. Please feel free to contact me at if you have any questions or ideas for our association.

The 2020 Joint MCMLA/MWMLA Annual Conference in October was a huge success, especially considering that it was our first ever virtual conference. I cannot give enough praise to all the chapter members who contributed time and energy to making the conference happen in such a short period of time. Thank you to members who served on the conference committees:  Kathryn Mlsna, Budget and Finance; Angie Tucker and Sarah Jane Brown, Program and Education; Michelle Kraft and Tyler Nix, Publicity and Outreach; Caroline Allen, Anna Liss Jacobsen and Merle Rosenzweig, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA); Jessica DeCaro, Exhibitors; Elizabeth Huggins, Website; Margaret Hoogland, Fundraising; and LaTeesa James, Scholarships.  And a big thank you to Sarah Jane Brown and Liz Weinfurter for representing our chapter as Conference Co-Chairs.  It was great to see so many familiar faces at the Annual Board Meeting.

2020 has been a challenging year and all have felt the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.  The posters and lightning talks presented at our annual meeting showed some of the ways we have adapted to this new world. While I found the presentations and talks valuable, the sense of comradery that I felt during the annual meeting was just as important to me as the content that was presented. My goal for this year is to investigate ways to create more opportunities for us to come together to share our experiences and wisdom with each other.

Another goal is to assist in any way I can to make sure that our newly formed Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Action (IDEA) Committee is a meaningful and impactful addition to the Midwest Chapter/MLA. Thank you to Caroline Allen for taking on the role as committee chair for IDEA.

We have tentative plans to hold the 2021 Midwest Chapter/MLA Annual Meeting in Bloomington, Indiana, but we are not sure what the future holds. More information will be communicated when we know more about our options for 2021. In any event, I hope to find other ways to connect with you virtually throughout the year.

All the best,

Liz Suelzer, Midwest Chapter/MLA President 2021
