Hello Midwest Chapter members! I hope you are all having a good summer. Medical libraries do not get to enjoy the slow summers that happen on other academic campuses. Instead, we are busy preparing for new medical students, orienting the residents who begin in July, and onboarding staff at the clinics and institutions we support. I hope you are all able to get some sun and time outside despite your busy schedules.
The Chapter Board has been busy these past few months working on a 3-year strategic plan for our chapter. We spent May and June doing a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) Analysis of the chapter. This was done virtually utilizing Padlet and through Zoom meetings. I was grateful that so many members contributed to the SWOT Analysis. Some themes that came through in the SWOT Analysis include:
- There is a need for better recruitment, training and support for chapter leaders and committee members.
- Annual meetings came up often, and there is a need to reevaluate how they will look going forward, especially with two virtual meetings in a row.
- Members are looking for more opportunities to connect with each other throughout the year. Some ideas for connections include educational webinars, social hours, training sessions, etc.
- Our Fundraising Committee is relatively new, and we want to make sure it is successful.
The Chapter Board is also working on creating vision, values, and mission statements for our organization. In the next month or two, the Chapter Board will have a mini retreat to set our goals for the next three years. An invitation will go out to all members, and you are welcome to attend as well.
The Annual Meetings Committee is hard at work planning our upcoming annual meeting scheduled for October 13 – 15. We are having another virtual joint meeting with the Midcontinental Chapter. I hope to connect with many of you during the virtual conference! Be sure to watch for announcements from the Awards & Scholarship Committee about awards, and please consider submitting a nomination. We anticipate an in-person conference in 2022 in Bloomington, Indiana.
I’m looking forward to seeing you in October at the Annual Meeting.
President, Midwest Chapter/MLA 2020-21
