A choice based on the desired goal
To choose an ecological disinfectant, it all depends on the goal you are aiming for. Do you want to clean and disinfect at the same time? Do you want to disinfect your clothes, your hands or a window? So many questions need to be asked.
For hands
With Covid-19 having appeared since the end of 2019, the market is teeming with disinfection products. We see something for all tastes, but above all for all compositions. Many boast about offering eco-friendly products, but what are they really about?
Before choosing a hand product, already opt for an alcohol-free disinfectant. This measure allows you to protect your hands from burns. Although alcohol is very effective against germs and bacteria, it tends to be a bit dangerous in the long term. For an alcoholic disinfectant to take effect, it must be rubbed for a few seconds on the hands. This sometimes creates abrasion of the skin without us realizing it. In the long term, this has harmful consequences on the hands.
Besides alcohol, also check if your hand sanitizer is made from natural products. If you read that plant extracts were used, that is good, but it is not enough. Check the quantity used. It is essential that natural products are present at least 50 or 60%.
For surfaces and clothing
Here, it is more difficult to find eco-friendly disinfectants. In fact, the more chemical it is, the better it works on wood, glass or even aluminum. The ideal is to use natural products which have a composition not far from that of purely chemical products. There is, for example, lactic acid which is of plant origin. It is found in several plants. It effectively disinfects your surfaces and clothing.
If you don’t want a product found in supermarkets, opt for an eco-friendly disinfectant found in your kitchen. There is, for example, bicarbonate or black soap. They are easily available, but most importantly, they work on hands, clothing and surfaces.
A choice based on price
Price is a determining factor when choosing an ecological disinfectant. Know that an eco-friendly product that doesn’t cost much is worthless. Indeed, it is easier to make mixtures in a laboratory to obtain chemical products than to extract the ingredients directly from nature. This aspect of things tends to considerably increase the cost of production and therefore the cost of sale. Unless it is black soap, white vinegar or baking soda, you will need a significant budget. You may have to spend €50 or more for an eco-friendly disinfectant while chemical ones cost $5 to $10, sometimes less.
A choice based on standards
You can also choose your disinfectant by checking whether it complies with the EN 14476 standard. This standard provides the conditions under which disinfectants and other cleaning products can eliminate viruses. However, it does not give any details on the ecological nature. It just certifies the effectiveness of the product.
